Do You Do a Didgeridoo?

About the Author NA
Wonderful Read! (Borders Book W/ CD-Rom Version) This is a wonderful book! My 4-year-old loves this one. The illustrations are what first drew me to this book. They are silly and zany, yet still very well done! The main character is looking for a musical instrument called a "didgeridoo." So, he goes into a musical instrument shop, and goes on and on and on about how happy he would be if he had a didgeridoo; where he would play it, who he would play it for, who he would play it with, etc. This one ends with a surprise twist at the end! Very cute! I got mine from Borders; it came with a CD-Rom. (The sticker on the front of the book says that the CD-Rom is a Borders exclusive.) The only drawback is that I can't get it to play in just a regular CD player, like the one in my car. (If anyone has a remedy for this, I'd love to know about it. I'm not the most computer savvy person in the world.) Anyway, the CD-Rom comes with two readings: one with page-turning signals, and one without. The story on the CD-Rom is read by Jonathan Rhodes, who does a wonderful job. They also throw in some musical notes so that the reader can get an idea of just what on earth a didgeridoo sounds like! Great audio! Lastly, the CD-Rom comes with an option to print black-and-white pictures of the characters in the music shop that you and your little ones can color together. 5 stars for this one, any day! Do You? This book has spurred a new language in our twins' lives. Do you do a Didgeridoo? How awesome is that? They love the story and the pictures and the rhyming and the many new words. I wish we had a dozen other books winning this kind of affection from both of our very-different twins! More than just silly rhyme.... I bought this book for my daughter because of the colors and images in the book. The mysterious stranger asking the music store owner looks like a long lost cast member of The Beatles Yellow Submarine cartoon. The rhymes rival anything Dr. Seuss composed, yet it offers enough diversity in it's vocabulary and introduces exotic animals and instruments as well. The Didgeridoo is an Aboriginal wind instrument that produces a low, droning sound. Not too many children's books with that as the central focus. It is a fun read, unlike a lot of Seuss books that tongue tie just for the sake of tying. Give it a look.

Amazon Sales Rank: #8847 in Toys & Games Brand: HOHNER Model: HRM6 Dimensions: 1.60 pounds

Great music set, high quality, worth it I bought this for my 18 mo old daughter so she would have some instruments at home to play with. She attends Music Together classes, and these are great for home use. I think it is great that they label this a 6-piece, which refers to the 6 different instruments as opposed to six pieces of things in the set. It is definitely worth the money. The set came with a cotton drawstring bag for storage, and 6 different one-page brochures, which had suggested songs/chants to try with each instrument classified by age range, and also lists the educational purpose for each class. The age range is over 3 years, but I think you can still use it with supervision for younger kids. The set contains the following: 3 wood mallets (two for the cymbals, one for the wood block) 1 soprano wood block 1 triangle and 1 striker 2 cymbals 1 tambourine 2 rhythm sticks (one ridged and one smooth) 1 wrist bells I like pretty much all the parts, except for the soprano wood block. It sucks and seems to be the only cheaply made item in the set. It is made of wood and has a heavy coating of varnish. It doesn't sound that great either. The wood mallets are small, and made of two pieces. The end seems to be glued pretty well to the stick, so I make sure to supervise during use in case the end comes off, as that can be a choking hazard. There is a ridged rhythm stick and a smooth one, made of wood and painted. The smooth stick was slightly warped, but still works alright. You scrape them together or tap them. We use these in the Music Together classes too. There are two 5" cymbals, the handles are made of wood and the cymbal part is a thick metal. They are not curved much so the sound doesn't carry well, but they work well enough for a young child. The edges are thick enough not to cause injury. Still, you must be cautious as stepping on the edge or tripping over them is still quite painful. My daughter likes to bang them together and then hold them on the sides of her face. I tried this too, and it sounds interesting. The triangle is nice. It is metal and has a tiny little string to hold it up. The striker is also metal and has a plastic rubbery cap on one end. It is quite small and a choking hazard, so I don't let my kid use it at all. There are three wood mallets in the set, and those work fine as a striker. The sound carries very nicely. There is also a tambourine. It is made of plastic that looks like wood. The top part is a plastic sheeting, but seems strong enough so far. My daughter sometimes stands on it and it's still intact. The coins on the sides are a shiny metal and sound tinny. There is only one wrist bells. These sound great. They are like the kind of medium jingle bells you see at Xmas and are attached to a nylon strap that has a rivet on it. You can put it on your wrist, however it is not adjustable. It is very loud but cheerful sounding. Overall these are great. Some of the instruments are similar to ones used in the Music Together classes. I have stored them in a covered plastic container and everyday my daughter brings the container to me to open it. She seems to enjoy them a lot. I highly recommend these over some cheap junky set like one from Simba. I think the quality is even better than the Band in a Bucket, which I also have. These are definitely going to last a long time. Nice rhythm instrument set! I purchased this for my preschooler at home and he loves this set. Highly recommended! Good, but not a wow toy I ordered this for my Salvation Army Angel Tree 4 year old who wanted a musical toy. This really seemed to fit the bill online, but when it arrived I was a little underwhelmed. I had seen similar toys in stores and they all seemed a lot bigger. Unfortunately, this just didn't seem like the exciting gift a 4 year old would want on Christmas. I decided to go out and buy a different toy for my angel, but will keep this and give it to my 1 year old daughter who will love it.

Bucket Full of Rain
The DejaBlue Grass Band

Music at it's best! If you love real music, even if you don't usually enjoy bluegrass, you'll be captivated by the instrumentals and especially the harmonies in the whole album of DejaBlue Grass Band's "Bucket Full of Rain." The disc covers every genre of real music out there. From standard blue grass tunes (My Saro Jane) to past country hits (Drivin' My Life Away) to gospel (Swim That River of Jordan - which especially showcases the harmonies) to a famous Prince piece (When Doves Cry). The lead singer, Joeseph Bowers, co-wrote the title song and is an instant favorite of all who hear it. DejaBlue Rox Bluegrass! This is such a refreshing sound for bluegrass. It's bluegrass w/a twist. The harmony among the guys is amazing! They have everything...gospel, traditional bluegrass, pop tunes, and, yes, even PRINCE! This CD is a pleasure for folks of all ages! These guys are very talented musicians and sound wonderful together. The instrumentals are authentic and have a down-home feel. This CD is so good that my 3 year old always ask to hear it. If you want to listen to a feel-good CD that's up tempo & makes you smile, this is the one to get!

Great case, ok harps (off key, low volume) not for beginners The case is excellent, very light and protective, although some of the screws in the handle fell off and had to be reattached with superglue. That said, let's talk about the harps. Well, first of all, I'm used to the hohner blues harp MS, so have that in mind. Comparing to the hohners, my first impression is that these harps sound like they have half of the volume. I tried to use more air but that would result in no significant increase in volume (and sometimes in a non-sounding hole). Also, as a first impression I noticed that these harps are very light weighted. Almost half of the harps in the set are somewhat off key (some more than others), but I just notice it when I play chords. Another issue is that in order to get some notes to sound properly you must have good air control (like the one you need for bending). These harps are easy to bend, but not so different (probably less easy) from what I'm used to with the hohner. Also, you must get to know the harps in terms of air flow. If you don't know your way around them or have poor air control you might end up with many dead notes (the holes just won't sound). I found that by playing around with them for a while until I realized the right amount of air that I should use to get the notes and the bends (this air amount might vary from harp to harp). Even though I could get all holes to produce their respective notes, sometimes I had to used so much air (probably due to air leaks) that I consider these holes (mostly upper ones, like 9th or 10th) unusable in practical scenarios. With all these restrictions (having to use weird variations of air flow, low volume, off-key harps, etc) I don't thing these harps should be used by beginners at all. Also, having to take care of all of this to get a proper sound makes you have a low/shy volume playing. If you are a beginner buy a good C diatonic harp, learn the basics with this harp first, and then consider buying this set (probably to have more keys, I can't think of other reason). If you're not a beginner, well, what can I say? All arguments will fall based on the price (btw, I bought mine for 49 bucks). These harps are damn cheap, dude! It's almost like you're buying a case and getting back-up harps as a bonus. Also, I think if you have the skills to tune then up you might end up with good harps. So I think it's worth a shot. Fipple Bansuri Bamboo India Music Instrument Set of Seven (bansuri2)
From ShalinCraft

Bamboo Flutes from India, bansuri is a transverse alto flute made of a single length of bamboo with six or seven open finger holes. According to Wikipedia, bansuri is an ancient musical instrument associated with cowherds and the pastoral tradition. It is intimately linked to the love story of Krishna and Radha, and is depicted in Buddhist paintings from around 100 AD. It is intimately associated with Krishna's Rasa lila; the tunes on his flute are poetically associated with driving the women of Braj mad. The North Indian bansuri, typically about 14 inches long, was traditionally used as a soprano instrument primarily for accompaniment in lighter compositions including film music.

Kartal Indian Musical Instrument
From ShalinCraft

The kartal is also known as khartal. This too is an ancient instrument. It has always been a favourite with saints and seers. Even today we find the kartal being used in temples and gurdwaras. According to S Bandhopadhyaya in Musical Instruments of India kara means hand and tala means clapping, i.e., the instrument played by hands to keep rhythm in devotional song, kirtana and dance. Despite being used for devotional music it has carved an important place for itself amongst the exponents of folk music in Punjab. The contemporary rural bhangra dancers sport the toombi or iktara in one hand and khartal in the other while dancing. Meera Bai attained salvation by singing devotional songs using the toombi in one hand and kartal in the other. This instrument even today accompanies bhajans, hymns, or mournful songs on sad occasions. A pair of wooden castanets with little bells attached to them was the earliest form of the kartal. Kartal comprises two similar shaped wooden pieces and is approximately eight to twelve inches long and two to three inches wide. Small round brass pieces are affixed over these wooden pieces. One of the pieces has a space for the thumb and the other to hold four fingers. It is played by the same hand.

Music Activity Book
By Ellen J. McHenry

entertaining puzzles with musical themes invite youngsters to follow-the-dots, navigate unusual mazes, match musical notes and letters to form words, complete crossword puzzles and more while they learn to recognize and identify musical instruments and develop other learning skills. Solutions.

Disappointed "Music Activity Book" is made uo of extremely easy connect-the-dots pictures of instruments. It does not contain any music theory pages, which is why I bought it. A waste of money for music teachers; an overpriced coloring/connect-the-dots book for parents to buy for their children.

Hugh Tracey Treble Kalimba with Internal Mic Pickup - 17-key Treble Kalimba
From Hugh Tracey

Hugh Tracey Kalimbas are hand made thumb pianos from South Africa, known the world over for their beautiful tone. These instruments are truly authentic both in construction and sound. The Kalimba - depending on the region also called Thumb Piano, Finger Piano, Mbira, Sanza or Likembe - is a wood box on which a collection of metal strips are mounted. The Kalimba is held in the hand or on the knee and the musician plucks the free hanging strips with the thumb or fingers.
Amazon Sales Rank: #9050 in Musical Instruments Color: Natural Brand: Hugh Tracey

Nice authentic African Instrument Am really enjoying my Kalimba. The unit was smaller than I was expecting but I didn't check the measurements before ordering so it was just my wrong concept. The treble scale is reported to be a bit smaller than the alto in terms of tine spacing. If so, I'd probably be happier with the alto as I have big hands and the space is a bit pinched on the treble. Sound wise it is beautiful with lots of sustain and clear bell like tone. The hole on top and the two smaller holes on the bottom allow for some neat vibrato effects. The pickup works fine. I did find the finish of the metal tines to be a bit rough. They were not properly formed and smoothed on the end where you fingers/nails strike the tine. I would polish them myself but am not sure if that will change their pitch. These are very fun instruments to pick up and doodle with even if not trying to play a proper song.

Ahead Switch Stix 5A Drum Sticks with Mallet End
From Ahead

Ahead Switch Stix 5A drum stick with mallet end.
Amazon Sales Rank: #7095 in Musical Instruments Brand: Ahead

Ahead hello,i have many pairs of ahead drumsticks. These i have to say are my best and nicest pair. I say this, because i am in a marching band at school, and these sticks are PERFECT. Never once have i had a problem with these whatsoever. They are great for marching snare/quads.And the mallet of course is GREAT for the cymbols, and bells(marimba). Also on the side of band, i am an expert and play blast beats on a drumkit. I consider myself this good because i am sponsored by a drumstick company, and these sticks are what i use almost every time i break down on my kit. So instead of buying some wooden sticks that will bust within a few weaks, buy these sticks.Their aluminum,so dont worry about breaking them, plus it has plastic sleeves to protect indentation of the stick itself while playing. I also play EXTREMELY aggressive, and have had 0 problems whatsoever.

Schylling Mini Electric Piano [Toy]
From Schylling

A great sound with working piano keys. Requires 2 AA batteries, included.
Amazon Sales Rank: #102705 in Toys & Games Brand: Schylling Model: Schylling

Great Product! I bought this product as a gift for my friend's almost 3-year-old. Although I haven't given it to him yet, I'm sure he'll love it. When it came in the mail, I immediately tore open the package to try it out. The batteries were already supplied; all I had to do was start playing. As a pianist for over ten years myself, I must say that this is one of the most realistic pianos a child could have without drving their parents crazy. There are a few minor problems: no on/off switch and no volume control, but overall, this is a great toy. One VERY NICE thing about this toy is that it only plays one note at a time no matter how many keys you press. That way, if a child bangs on the piano, it only plays one note. I highly recommend this product! Not to mention that it is so cute, too! A good buy Its a real nice mini piano. Its just a simple piano for your little ones to get a feel for the musical notes. There are no fancy music like rhymes etc that comes along with this piano. I recommend this to people who want to introduce some musical notes to your toddlers.

Good Beginner Amp I bought this for my wife who is learning to play on an electric acoustic. The size is good and the sound is really clear and loud enough to fill a good sized room. The only reason I did not give this a full 5 star rating is that it seems a bit plastic and cheaply made. As I work with sound equipment all the time the input jack seems cheap and I am afraid that after repeated plugging in and out or if you kick it (by accident) or it falls off from where it is sitting and the chord is plugged in you may break the jack. So I gave it three stars because it is a good light use beginner amp that really does sound great, just weary of the input jack. A Steal at $49.99! Compact size...big sound...and a Fender to boot...great for practice...works very well with either electric guitar or microphone...I highly recommend it!! Best inexpensice practice amp I have used Of the small amps I have tried this is the loudest and nicest sounding. I am very happy with it.

Among other things, we gold-plated the reed plate in order to achieve the specific sonic requirements." The new harmonica is appropriately named the Bob Dylan Signature Series. It features custom cover-plates bearing Dylan's signature, a carrying case embossed with Dylan's "Eye" logo, and an outer gift box featuring an exclusive picture of Dylan in the inside cover. What's in the Box Bob Dylan Signature Harmonica (Key of C), Carrying case, Gift box
Hmmm I'm a huge Bob Dylan fan, which makes this all the more embarrassing. Buy a $30 harmonica with a manufactured signature on it for over 3-times the original price. Ebay fodder. Junk. Superb sound Received my Dylan harmonica today. A bit pricey but superb sound and quality. Worth every penny. Couldn't be happier! If your a Dylan fan, buy it! You won't be sorry! No Problems Here An overpriced Hohner, yes, but I have no problems with that: I like Dylan and bought it because I wanted it. The outrageous cost of international shipping by the seller (not Amazon), on the other hand, is criminal. I should have checked the local music shops where they had the same item for less than what I paid for the item plus shipping.

Darbuka 101 If you've ever considered wanting to learn Darbuka or are looking for a reasonably priced goblet drum with a price that might seem like a steal, this drum is exactly it. Had I known this drum was being sold at this price years ago I would've been rattling and rolling my fingers over the drum head of this wonderful instrument long ago! I was skeptic at first that a drum that I've heard and learned so much about could go for a price like this without some kind of repercussions of it being faulty or something similar of the sort-- I was wrong! This drum is fabulous, despite the fact that there are known 'professional' darbukas out there that exist, this is still a wonderful instrument at an amazing price that won't disappoint. It offers great range of sound with sharp, resonant 'teks' and heavy, bass-filled 'doums' and rimshots on this piece come out clear, crisp and loud. Though I may acquire several 'upperclass' darbukas along the way, I honestly believe this drum alone is going to be a long favored item by me, as it was and always will be the reason I got into darbukas and hand drums to begin with. It's served me well, still serves me well and if there's any doubt in your mind about this drum, relinquish such thoughts because this drum will not disappoint you. Users Note: Remember to tune the head ever so often, as punishing blows with average use will hinder the drum and you'll notice it by the way it sounds. The drum will begin to sound muted, dull, a little bland but give the drum a good tightening of the heads and you're back to base one with sheer bliss of this drum's outstanding quality. A mind-blowing purchase, really. Fun little instrument for the whole family My son received this for Christmas last year and it has been so much fun for the entire family. It has a nice sound to it and it is very sturdy. My one and only complaint is that if kids stick their hands in the underside then they get black stuff all over their hands. We've just had to make a rule that your hand cannot go inside the darbuka. Even with that little issue I give this 5 stars. Love this darbuka Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka, 8 Inches I have several drums, and this is my favorite sounding one. I am very happy with the quality too. The drum is well balanced and made to last. Highly recommended.

Arthur Fiedler Boston Tea Party
By Arthur Fiedler - The Boston Pops Orchestra

Arthur Fiedler: Boston Tea Party. Tracks: The Merry Wives of Windsor: Overture//Fantasia on Greensleeves//Minuet//The count of Luxemburg: Waltzes//The merry Widow: Waltz//Moonglow and theme from "Picnic"//Hernando's Hideaway from "The Pajama Game"//The Bohemian Girl: Overture//

Boston Pops Sampler BMG has digitally reprocessed a complete 1958 "Living Stereo" recording by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops Orchestra that gives a good sampling of the variety of music Fiedler programmed during his 50-year tenure (1929 to 1979) in Boston. This album even features the original color photograph with Fiedler and some pretty women at a formal tea party. It remains a delightful and enjoyable collection of light classics and even selections from popular films and musicals. The Boston Pops Orchestra is drawn from members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and still gives many of its concerts in Boston's Symphony Hall. A long tradition has been the Esplanade concerts on the Charles River. Although pops concert began in the late nineteenth century, it was Fiedler who really popularized them through recordings, broadcasts, and even telecasts. Beginning in July 1935, the Pops recorded for RCA Victor, a relationship that continued until the late 1960's. The classical selections on this CD include a rare stereo recording of the overture to Michael Balfe's "The Bohemian Girl," an operetta that was adapated for a Laurel and Hardy feature film released in 1936. The overture features many of the familiar tunes from the operetta and those familiar with the film will recognize them. It is extremely well-played by the orchestra. A special treat is a wonderful performance of the overture to Otto Nicolai's opera "The Merry Wives of Windsor." This showcases the Boston strings and includes some very sensitive and virtuoso playing by the orchestra. The only recording that may rival this one is Sir Thomas Beecham's recording for Columbia. Fiedler excels in two familiar pieces from the operettas of Franz Lehar, "The Merry Widow" and "The Count of Luxemburg." These fully capture the Viennese spirit and have all of the ebb and flow typical of Lehar's music. Another rarity is Bolzoni's "Minuet," a piece that Toscanini often programmed. It really showcases the string players. Interestingly, Toscanini and Fiedler were friends. Toscanini expressed his admiration for what Fiedler was doing and called him "Arturo" since they actually share variations of the same first name. "Hernando's Hideaway" from the musical "Pajama Game" is delightfully performed. There is considerable whimsy and energy in the performance, too, of music that has recently been revived on Broadway. For the 1955 film adaptation of William Inge's "Picnic," the popular tune "Moonglow" was combined with the film's theme to create a new tune, which was a highlight of the film when Kim Novak danced at the climax of the festivities (after being crowned a beauty queen). This is yet another rare recording by Fiedler. Fiedler was at the height of his powers in Boston when these selections were taped in Boston's Symphony Hall in the spring of 1958. The album was quickly released later that year as RCA Victor flooded the classical market with a number of stereo LPs in its three-channel "Living Stereo" process. It remains a very enjoyable album and the sound still amazes the listener.

The Encyclopedia of Music
By Max Wade-Matthews

Instruments of the orchestra and the great composers. This is an authoritative guide to instruments of the orchestra and great composers. It covers the history of music-making, each family of instruments, over 100 composers and much more. Comprehensively written and beautifully illustrated with over 1,000 paintings, drawings and photographs, this book is an indispensable reference for music lovers everywhere.

An Excellent book! This book is fabulous because of its grasp on very many topics in this very diverse world of music. It begins by defining music and its universal qualities and then tells of the different insturments of ancient cultures and tells of how music was originally structured. I find this book great for people who are well knowledged of music and equally so for those who want to become well knowledged of music. This books massive variety of information is both usefull and informative. It gives thousands of beautiful pictures and offers detailed information on 100s of instruments organized by section. It also gives wonderful descriptions of composers who are grouped by their eras. It gives very informative information on each of the eras (a big plus!). This is a great book that no music lover should be without. Great music encyclopedia I really recommend this book to anyone who wants a nice overview of Musical instruments, history, and composers. It has great coverage of all the instruments and some information on how they work and are played. It covers a ton of music history and talks about many composers. I haven't gotten a chance to really thoroughly read it yet but I'm already very impressed and like it better than the other encyclopedia I had looked at. Awesome book! I am a high school music teacher and I use this book for my music appreciation class. It is extremely accurate and very helpful with instruments, composers, and time periods!

The Saxophonist's Workbook-A Handbook of Basic Fundamentals
By Larry Teal

Some of the topics discussed are; tone development, the staccato, lower and upper registers. 44 pages

Larry Teal's "The Art of Saxophone Playing" is better... Larry Teal also wrote "The Art of Saxophone Playing." "The Art of Saxophone Playing" book is considered to be one of the "must buy" books if you are seriously interested in playing the saxophone. This book is better than Larry Teal's Saxophonist's Workbook. The Saxophonist's Workbook is not as important as "The Art of Saxophone Playing" book but it is a good handbook of the basic saxophone fundamentals that players need. This an intermediate level book that has many saxophone topics and exercises for saxophone players. A Must book for serious saxophone students and performers For intermediate level and up, this book fosters development of the entire range of the horn in all keys, major and minor. It is useful for both legit and jazz artists. The exercises quickly reveal weaknesses and shows how to correct them. A great 1/2 hour warm-up for any practice session.

The Science of Sound (Addison-Wesley series in physics)
By Thomas D. Rossing

The Science of Sound is a lavishly illustrated, authoritative text that comprehensively covers the science of sound. Students of acoustics, speech and learning and physics will appreciate this text. Emphasis is placed on understanding the phenomena of sound, and a wide variety of topics are discussed. Physics fundamentals are presented early to allow for a branching out of topics later in the course.

From the Back Cover The Science of Sound is widely recognized as the leading textbook in the field. It provides an excellent introduction to acoustics for readers without college physics or a strong background in mathematics. In the Third Edition, Richard Moore and Paul Wheeler join Tom Rossing in updating The Science of Sound to include a wide range of important technological developments in the field of acoustics. New exercises and review questions have been added to the end of each chapter to help readers study the material. About the Author Thomas D. Rossing completed his B.A. at Luther College in 1950, his M.S. and Ph.D. at Iowa State University in 1954. His dissertation was in the field of molecular physics. After graduating, he went into industrial research, and from there, he went to teaching. Currently, he is a professor at Northern Illinois University.Professor Rossing has published more than 200 papers and ten books. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has held about a dozen research positions other than at his home institution—in national laboratories, in research universities, and in several other countries. The Acoustical Society of America awarded him the Silver Medal in Musical Acoustics.
Lots of Problems This book should have been a classic introduction to musical acoustics. Instead, it tries to hard, is convoluted, often in error, and confuses musicians. When I taught from this book, I and the class found errors in equations, references to equations, and calculations. When undergraduates are struggling to learn, this is a very bad context. The book is so concerned with a level of comprehensiveness, that measured clarity is left out. At the same time, for the expert, it is too little. Therefore, it appeals to neither the introductory level nor the more advanced level. I gave up using this book. A good elementary textbook I have used this book as the primary textbook for an introductory course in the physics of music. It is at a somewhat higher level than some of its competitors (e.g. "The Acoustical Foundations of Music" by Backus) but still suitable for non-science majors with weak math backgrounds. It is the most thorough and informative book I have seen at this level. However, the students complained that it was somewhat dull. Also, the section on electronic reproduction of music is out of date--relatively little on CD's etc., and nothing on mp3 and related technologies. Still, I plan to use it again. Toned down math, but still pure sound I have taught a course entitled "Acoustics for Musicians and Recording Engineers" to Engineering, Music, and Film majors using Rossing's THE SCIENCE OF SOUND. He has toned down the equations enough that the students aren't groaning, yet he's remained true to the interdisciplinary nature of acoustics as a pursuit of physics, psychology, math, and engineering. The structure of the book provides a wonderful outline for the course and it has been an invaluable resource for both me and the students who have wished to continue with their study of acoustics.

Popular Musical Instruments Vocabulary Cards
By Maitri Learning

These vocabulary cards are classic Montessori materials that let the pre-reader work with captivating photos without the distraction of the written word. They are designed to be used in the home or school for vocabulary building lessons, object-to-photo matching, and for sorting work (e.g., sorting pets from transportation). Decent for Beginners Not a bad harp for a beginner. I recently bought it (my first harmonica) and within a week blew out two reeds. Has good sound, just make sure not to continually blow or draw really hard on one hole. eh... worked well for one day. now day two, the 2 draw and 10 blow reeds dont work... also not very well crafted lots of air gaps the air is escaping and not even touching reeds. although hohner is a great brand save money and buy higher line of hohner. good for 5 dollars plays good at first. easy to bend up to the 6 hole. 7-10 holes are hard to play consitantly.

Wooden Egg Shaker
From Woodstock

Must have for babies, kids love them too This is one of my go-to gifts for baby showers and first birthdays. We were first introduced to these egg shakers in our baby music class when our daughter was 6 mos old. She loved them so much we had to order some for home. She is now almost 6 years and STILL enjoys them. They make a nice noise, not too loud and in a pitch that doesn't drive me absolutely batty. No batteries needed. Barely take up any space. Kids like/use them for years. What more can I say? They're a must have!

Guitar Head
By Bob Hardenbrook

I have been graced with the time and opportunity to finally sit down, shut the outside world out, and dedicate my full attention and time to a collection of very special vintage instruments that I have collected over the last 20 odd years. With no deadlines, no rules, surrounded by these guitars, Ive let the tones lead and inspire me on this mysterious, creative, musical journey. The results are thirteen instrumentals that I came to call Guitar Head, as the title of my first CD. Twenty-five unique instruments, from pre-war Gibsons, to late 1950s Fenders and Gibson electrics, make up these songs, recorded in a variety of combinations. The music of Guitar Head is not easy to categorize. Feel good music is what it is,.. good for the heart and soul. The songs were started with and idea, a single track inspired by the vintage instrument featured or the tuning, and then layered, one by one, as the songs came to be. I never knew what would be in the end. I play all of the instruments, with the exception of the drums, courtesy of Jimmy Paxson. This is my attempt to capture and share these tones and hear what the instruments have shared with me. Its all about the love of tone, the love of guitars, and the love of playing these wonderful instruments, that I am so lucky to have in my life. Enjoy.

A Splintered History of Wood: Belt Sander Races, Blind Woodworkers, and Baseball Bats
By Spike Carlsen

In a world without wood, we might not be here at all. Without wood, we wouldn't have had the fire, heat, and shelter that allowed us to expand into the colder regions of the planet. If civilization somehow did develop, our daily lives still would be vastly different: there would be no violins, baseball bats, chopsticks, or wine corks. The book you are now holding wouldn't exist.
Amazon Sales Rank: #76542 in Books Published on: 2008-09-01 Released on: 2008-08-26 Original language: English Number of items: 1 Binding: Hardcover 432 pages
From Publishers Weekly Carlsen (Reader's Digest Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual) gives a solid history of wood as he travels the world, analyzing the vast number of uses of a mundane natural resource. In doing so, Carlsen also uncovers the wide variety of personalities that work with wood every day, from the chainsaw artist appropriately named the Wild Mountain Man to the blind cabinetmaker who can see things with [his] fingers that you may not see with your eyes. He uncovers places where wood golf clubs are still manufactured today; explains which type of wood is best for a baseball bat; takes readers through the painstaking process used to make the beautiful Stradivarius violins and Steinway grand pianos; he also demonstrates how the gondola is a floating work of efficiency and ergonomic art. At one point, Carlsen visits a company in Maine that produces 50 billion toothpicks and 12 billion wooden matches each year. Carlsen includes photographs throughout this engaging and exhaustively researched work. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From School Library Journal Adult/High School–Carlsen explores our reliance on wood from numerous angles. A carpenter, woodworker, and author of dozens of books and articles on home improvement, he knows his subject well, and his love and respect for trees and all things made from them are evident on each page. The author includes just enough of the science of trees and wood, and of the technology of wood products and woodworking, to inform but not burden lay readers. Numerous stories add immeasurably to the books appeal. Readers are told how a Steinway piano is built, why a Stradivarius violin is so special, about the role of the long bow in military history, and how pens and pencils evolved. In addition, there are discussions of the offbeat, including a full-scale (and functional) Ferrari carved of wood, the 36-year remodeling project known as the Winchester House, a staircase with no visible means of support, and the use of wood forensics in the Lindbergh kidnapping case. Carlsen explores the extraordinary variety of woods on our planet, the profession and hobby of fine woodworking, the tools used to work wood, and the many uses of it in our lives–in music, sports, shelter, furniture, weapons, and transportation. The volume ends with a word on the highly complex issues surrounding human use of the worlds forests and the consequent effects on the global environment. Black-and-white photos are included. Thoroughly researched, thoughtful, and entertaining.–Robert Saunderson, Berkeley Public Library, CA Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist Who knew wood could be this fascinating? Who knew that perfectly preserved, enormous pieces of wood, dating back 50,000 years or more, are being pulled out of New Zealand bogs? Who knew that the oldest piece of nonpetrified wood is about seven million years old? Who knew that there exists a large, diverse, and rather enthusiastic group of wood connoisseurs who can tell you everything you want to know, and even more besides, about the differences between the various types of wood (and there are a lot of varieties)? According to the author, a carpenter, woodworker, as well as a writer, wood has had an enormous effect on world history and on the evolution of humankind. Clearly, when you think about it, he’s right: wood can be made into a toothpick or a city; it can be used for building things or making art; and it has survived as long as human beings themselves. As Carlsen tells the story, wood is a wondrous thing. --David Pitt
A wise informative book full of good humor This is a book about wood that will amaze you, inform you, make you wise and make you laugh. Where else, between two covers could you hope to learn about the history of the catapult, the worlds largest wooden airplane, a model city built of 2 million toothpicks, how a grand piano is made, the world championship belt sander races, and much, much more. On top of that you will get more solid, well-informed information about wood and trees than you ever thought you'd want to know. And you'll keep reading right to the end because it's beautifully and smoothly written and great fun throughout. Who knew?!? Spike Carlsen took a topic that could have been as exciting as, well watching wood grow, carved it into a well written story, with lots of humor and tales of how us humans---our very society itself---would not, could not be the same as it is today without this precious resource. This book, and the folks in it (and their unique personalities), and the woods themselves (each exotic specimen having its own incomparable story) is written with the same reverence an author would bring to a well researched and documented historical novel. He explains in exquisite, easy to read detail why certain woods are used for specific applications and how highly skilled craftsmen produce one of a kind pieces, which because they are made from material that were once alive, have taken on a life of their own. Great book I know will enjoy as much as I have! Not just for woodworkers Because this book is as much about people as it is about wood it's incredibly readable -- and funny. The author got out from behind the desk and got into the stories as much as possible and shares self-effacing tales along the way. The book is set-up as individual essays so readers can pick and choose where to start. I was drawn to the one on Jimmy Carter and how wood forensics helps to solve crimes. It's good for the Cliffy Claven in your life as well as the public radio essay listener looking for a human lesson behind the facts.

Attractive & Flimsy Really and truly, this is a toy, not a drum set that a 3 year old can actually use. On the first day of light use, the cymbal broke off. Now, two weeks later, the entire drum is in pieces. You are better off getting the Little Einsteins My First Instruments Play Set. It's much more durable and can take the banging of a 3 year old aspiring rock star. In good shape after a year ... My daughter's aunt gave this to her for her second birthday, and she loves it. It's a great toy for days we're stuck inside, and her friends head straight to it on play date days. One of my favorite memories is of my daughter at the drums and her little friend at the keyboard. Baby Band! This is not super durable if you have a rough-and-tumble kid, but it's held up to my daughter dragging it from room to room. We worked with her on what parts were OK to handle and which ones weren't (like the cymbal or the foot pedal). The drums are in great shape after a year. The cymbal, however, never stays on. It doesn't bother my little one. She just fixes it and gets back to business, but it could certainly be a problem for others. Overall, I would recommend. Big Band Drum Set Bought this for my 4 year old sons birthday. At first he loved it but after about 3 days the whole thing fell apart! The price makes it sound great but believe me save your money!!

Fun music set for babies and toddlers5
My 9-month-old daughter really likes making music and she just loves this set. Her favorites are the shakers. We have fun playing with the wave drum together also (she doesn't quite have the coordination to use that by herself yet). She goes to Gymboree and these are a lot like the music instruments that they use there. The wave drum is not as big as the one they use in the Gymboree music classes, but is very similar to the one they sell. The CD is nice also. Overall, I have been very happy with this purchase. She does not like many toys, so it has been nice to find something that can entertain herself with for a few moments.

From Library Journal
Historically, ethnic groups in many countries have used a great number of musical instruments made from gourds. In North America these instruments are used mainly by percussionists. Most of the step-by-step projects in this book by gourd artists Summit and Widess (The Complete Book of Gourd Craft) are for percussion or stringed instruments such as the Latin American guiro (gourd scraper) or the spike fiddle. There are also a few from the wind family, such as the fipple flute. These are legitimate musical instruments made from traditional materials, and they are fully playable as well as being beautifully crafted. Highly recommended for general crafts as well as ethnomusicology collections.

From Booklist
The authors introduce readers to make-it-yourself musical instruments. There is an amazing wealth of information here, covering not only how-to's and history but also extending into the social sciences and even science. We learn that pigeon flutes (crafted gourds attached to the birds' tails) were first mentioned about A.D. 1041 A.D. and that drummers are highly respected in India. Actual instructions on gourd transformations into spike fiddles, water drums, and even xylophones are included, along with a few photographs. But all the erudition tends to drown out the craft aspect, since instructions are sandwiched within the narrative text, and photographs are less than optimal. Nonetheless, a book that patient crafters will appreciate. Barbara Jacobs

Not much for quality instruments3
This book gives wonderful history and inspiration to anyone interested in crafting musical instruments from gourds. Having crafted several instruments myself, I found the real, usable information in this book rather limited, especially if you're looking to build a quality instrument. I would suggest the gourd crafter check out the book "Making Wood Folk Instruments" by Dennis Waring. The instructions are much better and in many cases can be altered to use gourds rather than wood.

incomplete directions and materials lists2
This book does not compare to Ginger Summit's previous books on gourd crafts. The material lists are incomplete and the instructions are poorly written. It was extremely frustrating, particularly to construct the thumb piano, to have incomplete parts list and the book assumes that the user has a fairly extensive knowledge of tools. I do NOT recommend this book to anyone who wants a quality folk type instrument. I have constructed four instruments and found the general directions poor. It was interesting from a historical folk instrument aspect but was not functional for helping one learn to create gourd instruments.

Making Gourd Musical Instruments5
A fantastic companion to "The Complete Book of Gourd Craft" (by the same authors). The history lesson on each type of instrument is wonderful for both adults and children. The photos of both ancient and new instruments are a pleasure to look at and an inspiration to get going on a project while the instructions for making the instruments are basic enough to get started and then let your imagination run wild. If you need more help with basic gourd craft, just refer to "The Complete Book of Gourd Craft" Happy Gourding!

Not a bad harp at all. Bit of a spiced-up Hohner.4
Due to health laws, harmonicas are unfortunately not an instrument you can try before buying. Fortunately, they're a lot cheaper than guitars. I've been playing harmonica for a number of years and I currently own about 40 or 50 different harmonicas, which I'd either buy for the different keys or to just try out different brands. I decided to give this one a go, too.

Obviously, ANY sort of signature musical instrument is going to cost a little more than its contemporaries, whether it's a Tony Iommi SG or an EVH 5150 amp. You're not just paying for a name, though. You're paying for a model that was made to custom specifications yet was also made to be mass-produced. So it goes with the Steven Tyler harp.

All things considered, this is not a bad harp. It's not the best I've ever played through, but it's sure better than the cheap $5-10 ones you might find in the stores ("Hot Metal" comes to mind). It's pretty air-tight and bright sounding. The notes are bendable. The reeds look like they're plated and really strong.

These harps only come in the key of "A". Though considering how many rock guitarists I've played with who never seem to want to venture off the key of "E" (the related cross-harp key for this harmonica), it might be all you need on some gigs.

You pay for the Celebrity name3
Just so you know where I'm coming from, I'm a beginner at harmonica with just a few harps. This one was bought for me as a gift.

It's a good harp but not up to the level of the other Hohners in the same price range. Most Hohners are made Germany, but this one is made in China. It sounds good, less brash than the Special 20, less mellow than the Blues Harp, but once you're familiar with it, you'll notice slight differences that are just a small step down in quality than other Hohners. The covers are not molded as smoothly, and have crimps in a few places, and gaps in a few others. And it's obvious that instead of sanding the edges of the comb smooth, they use heat because the front of the comb is a little uneven.

Now about those black covers...I have to admit that they do look nice. I'm assuming they are anodized aluminum (but I don't know for sure). Whatever they are, they sure do feel nice against the lips--less friction than stainless steel, and they don't get fingerprints and lip marks as easily.

I still like the way it sounds (as I'm a little partial to lower harps), but I'd say your paying about $10 just for the Steven Tyler name and the fact that it's black.

Stveven Tyler Harmonica - The Onyx of the Harps at last!5
I simply love my Steven Tyler harp. I received it via UPS just today. It is harp number twenty-seven in my arsenal, and what a radically different harp she is too.

All my other harps are silver, and one is gold. This one is black, which is radically and extraordinarily different. Most harps come in different keys. This Steven Tyler model, since he plays with Aerosmith, only comes in A.

It sounds like a common A harp, but the looks of her are totally different. The Steven Tyler autograph on the top, the red interior and black shell box, the overall black color, including her comb, all of these things make her stand out in a very unique and special way.

I never thought I'd get into Aerosmith, but with Steven Tyler on lead vocal and harmonica, I'm hooked forever.

If you play harmonica like I do, and you want a harmonica that will make you stand out in the band, or just want Steven Tyler's harp, by all means get your hands and lips on one of these onyx babies. Steven Tyler will thank you that you did himself. It's a fact.

Ghungharu Dancing Bells Musical Instruments of India
From ShalinCraft

Ghungharus are globular bells each about 2 cm in diameter. Dancers string them on ropes or sew them onto cloth or leather strips and wear them around ankles. Larger ghungroos may be strung on a circle of wire and shaken as accompaniment to a song. They are often fixed to other instruments to add to the sound. The bells are decorative in themselves and the cords strung are often bright and finished with tassels.

Les Paul: In His Own Words
By Les Paul, Michael Cochran

At thirteen, he took the tone arm from his father's phonograph, jammed the heavy needle into the top of his five-dollar guitar, and filled it with Plaster of Paris to quell feedback. The guitar didn't survive, but his idea worked, essentially creating the first solid-body electric guitar. Les Paul went on to alter guitars in his quest to create the perfect sound, making one breakthrough after another along the way. Nonstop experiments in his homemade recording studio led to the invention of sound-on-sound, multi-track recording, echo, and a host of other discoveries that revolutionized the recording industry, while he and wife Mary Ford dominated early 1950s pop charts with a continual string of hits. Taken together, the enduring influence of his unique contributions to recording technology, instrument design, and American popular music are unsurpassed. He truly is the man who changed the music, and now, Les Paul tells the whole story as only he could, in his own words.

Book and subject exceeding high expectations5
Back in '76 I heard 'Chester & Lester', an LP that introduced an artist whose name I knew only from the electric guitar I coveted more than any other: Les Paul. Much nice playing, much merriment, but to me, a Les Paul was supposed to produce the sounds of Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin. Many years and much ear-shattering rock and sophisticated jazz later, I picked up a copy of 'Best of Les Paul', music transcripts published by Hal Leonard, and I discovered some of Les Pauls jazz recordings and the nice recordings with Mary Ford, and the interviews with LP in the preface awakened the realisation that there might be more to discover about this character, who seemed to live and perform forever. Sadly, 'forever' came to an end on 13 August 2009, and this reminded me of 'Les Paul - In his own words', a book I'd intended to read for some time, and I ordered it immediately. It is a very large book and really heavy. The colour prints and the photos are of very high print quality, and the font size makes the reading comfortable. The many pictures of Les Paul's guitars, inventions, contraptions, the studio garage in LA and pictures of artists, groups and friends are much more interesting than I'd imagined. The person one discovers through the story - told to a good writer - is intelligent, humourous, lively and determined. It is also enjoyable to sense the drive and positive outlook in a person who has experienced set-backs, difficulties and disappointment without becoming bitter and disappointed, and who says nothing negative about other people. Les Paul makes me feel that when you have something you really want to accomplish, you can't afford to dwell on failures and disappointments. His anecdotes about meeting Django Reinhardt and Bing Crosby are delightful and funny. One obviously has to respect the achievement of a person who has meant so much for the guitar and recording for most of the past century, but the fact that the story of his life is also such delightful reading goes beyond mere recounting of historical achievement. This book is just better than I expected it to be, both in terms of the story it tells and the way it is told, and the pictures that tell a wondrous story in themselves. Les Paul had an extraordinary life, not just a long life, and his story reminds me to get a life - and get a guitar and play it - not just read about it.

Les Paul In His Own Words Book Review5
This is a great book with tons of insightful comments by the man himself, Les Paul. It runs through his life and accomplishments in a way only Les could do it, without sounding arrogant; always with charm and wit. Within the first few pages I learned a lot about Les that I'd never heard before on any documentary or biography of the Wizard of Waukesha. Great book if you're a fan of Les Paul, the electric guitar, multi-track recording or any of his other many inventions. I strongly suggest this book to all music lovers!

FANTASTIC !!5
Les Paul's life was truly amazing and this book covers every corner of it! The author's have done an outstanding job of presenting Les' life in a very "face to face" style which really draws the reader in and keeps their attention. This is the holy grail of Les Paul literature! A definite must have for any fan indeed! Highly recommended!! A+ !!

Exhaustive but Aged4
As it is really the first complete work on the history of musical instruments, this is a foundational text. In the sixty years since its publication, though, opinions and interpretations have changed, and better research has been done.

Nonetheless, the very readable style and global scope make this a worthwhile investment. The illustrations are very good for the time it was published. The organization is clearly structured by chronology and geography, yet connections are made across these boundaries. I enjoy the book immensely, both as a reference and for pleasure.

An aged must-read 4
This book provides a thorough description of the evolution of musical instruments from a multidisciplinary point of view from prehistoric times to mid-20th century. It comprises most historical epochs and geographical regions.
Good things about the book: it's a classic, very comprehensive (except for the electrophones), very clear in the technical descriptions, nice figures and pictures (although not enough for the many instruments discussed), it's a must-read for people interested in musical instruments and its evolution. I've learned a lot reading the book.
Bad things: it's aged in many respects. The language isn't politically correct when referring to some countries and peoples; it's too European-focused; gives too much importance to several simphonic orchestra instruments in comparison to other very popular instruments (the guitar family and its evolution is poorly treated, for instance); the electrophones are very badly treated and with some contempt. I know this is a 1940/1968 book and the electromechanical and electronic instruments were still in it's infancy, but some were already there (theremin, ondes Martenot, electric guitar, early synths) which would have deserved a much better treatment. Finally, I didn't like the author's remarks about some other people's work. Although he is an acknowledged scholar, sometimes he sounds very petulant.
I also disagree with the author in some technical aspects. For instance, his classification of musical instruments, although universally accepted, has several weak points in my opinion. Many scholars have followed Sachs' terminology too literally; that's why nowdays some people call 'lute' to any stringed instrument with a handle and neglect its original local name. The results is that a Spanish 'bandurria' is a 'lute' as well as a German 'Laute', or a North African 'gnbri'. That is very confussing and wrong.
